Choosing a Martial Arts School: The Safeguarding Questions Parents Should Ask

Every club deserves the standard safeguarding questions. Martial arts deserves a few more — about contact, gradings, sparring and the authority an instructor holds.

Our general guide covers the questions you'd ask any club — policy, safeguarding officer, background checks, reporting routes. Start there. This post adds the layer specific to martial arts, because a dojang has features most sports don't: routine physical contact, gradings, sparring, and a strong instructor hierarchy.

Questions about contact and technique

  • How is physical correction handled — do instructors explain the contact they use?
  • Can I watch classes?
  • What happens if my child is uncomfortable with a correction?

Questions about gradings

  • What does a grading actually involve?
  • Are they held in-house or away, and can parents attend?
  • Is progression based purely on merit and the syllabus?

Questions about sparring and contact

  • How is sparring matched and supervised?
  • What contact levels apply to children, and what gear is required?
  • How do you handle a student who spars too hard?

Questions about authority and discipline

  • What's your discipline style?
  • How do you handle a child who's struggling or misbehaving?
  • Can a child question or opt out of something that feels uncomfortable?

Questions about private lessons

  • Are one-on-one sessions observable and open to parents?
  • How are they arranged — through me, or directly with my child?

What good answers share

You're not looking for a single perfect script. You're listening for openness, a clear reason behind every practice, and no discomfort at being watched or questioned. An instructor who welcomes these questions is showing you something reassuring about how they run their school.

The bottom line

The martial-arts-specific questions get at exactly the features that make a dojang wonderful — and that need care. Ask them of any school, ours included. At WarinHari, we'd rather answer ten questions than have you wonder about one.
